Manuscript basics
Your page size and margins, explained.
A little space in the right places keeps your text easy to read.
Page size
Trim size is your printed book's width and height. Your template uses that page size, so you can start with a document that matches your book.
Inside margin
The inside margin, also called the gutter, leaves space beside the binding. Thicker books need more space here so the text stays comfortable to read.
Outside margins
Space at the top, bottom, and outer edge keeps text away from the cut edges. These templates use KDP's minimum margins, which you can increase to suit your layout.
See KDP's minimum margin measurements
| Page count | Inside margin |
|---|---|
| 24–150 pages | 0.375" |
| 151–300 pages | 0.5" |
| 301–500 pages | 0.625" |
| 501–700 pages | 0.75" |
| 701–828 pages | 0.875" |
Top, bottom, and outside margins must each be at least 0.25" for these no-bleed interiors.
These are margin bands, not printing limits. The tool shows the ranges available for your selected book details.

Questions authors ask
A few things worth knowing.
Q01Should I upload my manuscript as Word or PDF?
We recommend exporting your finished manuscript as a PDF before uploading it to KDP. When KDP converts a Word document for printing, your text layout and page count can change. A PDF helps preserve your finished layout. Check that the PDF retains your chosen trim size, then review it in KDP's Print Previewer before publishing.
Q02What if my manuscript is shorter than expected?
You can keep your template. KDP's margins are minimums, so the larger margins from a higher page-count range are still suitable for a shorter book.
Q03What if it exceeds my selected page-count range?
Download a template for the higher range, move your text into it, and check the resulting page count. Your count includes any opening and closing pages, not just the main text. If no higher range is available, check the printing limits for your selected book details.
Q04Can I make the margins larger?
Yes. These templates use KDP's minimum required margins for your selected range. You can increase them in Word to give your text more breathing room. Larger margins leave less room for text, so they can increase your page count.
Q05Can images reach the edge of the page?
Not with these templates. They are for interiors without bleed, so images and backgrounds must stay within the page margins. Images that reach the printed page edge need a different setup with bleed.
Q06Where do the measurements and page-count limits come from?
They follow Amazon KDP's published paperback and hardcover specifications. Available page-count ranges depend on your format, trim size, and ink and paper type. The templates provide a starting document; your final formatting and publishing checks remain your responsibility.
